East St. John softball picked up a district win against West Jefferson last Friday, putting the LadyCats at 2-1 in 5-5A play for the season heading into this Thursday’s district showdown with Destrehan in Reserve.
Stacy Sutton got the start on the mound for ESJ against West Jeff, going four innings while allowing no runs and allowing only one base-runner, which came on an error. Sutton struck out eleven batters in the outing, including the first six that she faced and all three in the fourth inning.
ESJ took advantage of eight West Jefferson errors in the game, and used a big fifth inning where the entire side made it to bat, increasing their lead from 2-0 to 7-0.
That inning started with Krista Tamplain leading off, getting on base with a hit to right field and scoring on a passed ball. Following a base on balls, and Sabrina Clement and Ashley Givens each recorded hits, scoring one run apiece. Another run scored on an infield hit to second on a fielder’s choice that missed the runner coming home. Lacy Sutton scored the final run of the inning with a single to center field.
Tamplain came out to the mound for the final two innings, striking out four and walking one.
The win puts East St. John at 9-5 on the season heading into a home district match-up with Destrehan Thursday. The DHS LadyCats have a 8-4 record.
