RESERVE- Pleasantries and cordialities were abound at the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board meeting on Thursday when two local teachers were honored for their accomplishments.

Jennifer Galloway was named the Teacher of the Year for a second year by the Council for Exceptional Children. Ms. Galloway, a behavior interventionist at Fifth Ward elementary was honored at the Louisiana Council’s Board for Exceptional Children in Lafayette on Jan. 30.

Galloway teared up with thanks as she acknowledged the many people who have helped her along the way, including her husband, a principal in the parish, and the staff, students and parents of St. John Parish.

One of Galloway’s students described her as &#8220my mama at school who is always there to help me to try and do right.”

&#8220Mrs. Galloway is a person that best demonstrates how to work effectively with exceptional children,” said Cindy Owens

Sandra Hubbard, a teacher at Lake Ponchartrain Elementary, received National Board Certification recognition from the Louisiana Board for professional Teaching Standards. Ms. Hubbard was a displaced teacher from Hurricane Katrina and has been at Lake Pontchartrain Elementary since the storm.

Principal Patricia Triche said she was honored to have Ms. Hubbard on staff.

Hubbard said she was grateful to have found a new home so late in her career and thanked Triche on making her feel welcome.

Hubbard teaches an inclusion Kindergarten class at the school.

In other business, the previous owner of the Elvina property purchased by the system will be off the property within two to three weeks and legal counsel Lloyd Leblanc said that the board should consider what to do with the house. The choices could include selling the building and moving it off property, tearing it down, or find some other use for it. The property was appraised at $28,000 per acre.
