VACHERIE- St. James Parish School Board has set a special election to be held on Saturday, May 5, 2007 to vote on renewal of two mill taxes that benefit the school system.

The renewal would not increase taxes in any way. The resolution to call the election passed by at vote of 7-0

The first millage renewal would ensure that the school board would continue to collect a nine mills property tax that is used to fund salary increases for teachers and other staff members. The tax renewal would be renewed from a period of 10 years, from 2007 to 2016 and would strictly continue funding of the schools’ salary requirements for teachers and staff. There would be no additional cost to taxpayers.

The second millage is a 10-year three mills tax continuation to help support the required salary increases for all teachers and employees that work with the Early Childhood Development program from 2007 to 2016.

Both taxes would help the school system to continue cost-of-living salary increases in the parish.
