Due to tardy umpires, Tuesday’s District 9-1A game between West St. John started 90 minutes late.

Likewise, the Lady Rams couldn’t seem to get going for much of the game against an East Iberville team that it defeated in three innings three weeks ago by the 15-run rule.

But the West St. John surge was better late than never. And after a fifth inning surge, the Lady Rams secured victory.

WSJ exploded for 13 runs in the top of the fifth inning to notch a 24-10 win at home on Tuesday by the 10-run mercy rule.

The Rams (4-5-1, 2-2) locked up second place in District 9-1A with the win, and have qualified for the postseason for the third consecutive year.

“Overall, we hit the ball well,” said West St. John Coach Brandon Dumas. “We didn’t finish it early like we wanted to. It took awhile, but we got it going.

“Now, we just have to put everything behind us entering the playoffs.”

West St. John (4-5-1, 2-2) led 9-2 in the third inning, but the Tigers scored eight runs in the next two innings to draw within one, 11-10, entering the fifth inning.

West St. John’s Destani Comminie had a big day at the plate. She went 4-for-6 with four RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Chasity Everson joined her, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs, four runs and three steals. Tranell Mitchell was 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Kori Hebert went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and two steals.

Comminie (4-2) earned the win on the mound, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. She struck out four.

“The district season went pretty much as we thought,” said Dumas. “We came in intending to finish one or two, and we did that. This win gives us some good momentum behind us as we get into the playoffs.”

Now, with those playoffs upon them, Dumas says his team is out to do something that’s never been done at West St. John before in softball – advance.

“We’re looking to make some history,” said Dumas. “We’ve never made it past the bi-district round at West St. John. Now, we’re in the playoffs, and anything can happen.”
