St. Charles Coach Don Peyton can’t remember the last time his Comets defeated Destrehan three straight times — if ever.

Well, actually, now he can.

The Comets notched a 5-1 win over the Wildcats at Destrehan on Monday, marking not only the SCC’s third consecutive win over DHS, but a three games-to-none sweep this season.

“The girls are on a roll,” said Peyton.

Reyna Lubin scored four goals and Kristine Brouwer added another in the Comet victory.

For St. Charles (9-2-2), the win extends an undefeated mark in December.

Peyton commented on how tough it is to defeat a quality team three times in a season — the law of averages catches up to you, if nothing else, he says.

But that was something he didn’t want his team to think about.

“It can be a roll of the dice to try and beat someone for the third time. Sooner or later, the breaks go against you. The challenge was really to keep the girls’ minds off that,” Peyton said. “And they came to play.”

St. Charles led 2-0 at halftime. The second goal came right before the half, a result of the Comets reacting to a move by the Wildcats defense.

“(DHS) moved Desiree (Harvey) up to forward. When the girls saw that, they passed a through-ball to Reyna, and it was off to the races,” Peyton said. “We scored a quick one right before the half, and I think it might have deflated their girls a bit.”

Lubin added a third goal early in the second half. Brouwer nailed her goal off of a corner kick, and Lubin added a fifth before time expired to put the exclamation point on the win.

Peyton says his team’s offense is hitting on all cylinders.

“They’re believing in themselves now,” Peyton said. “At the beginning of the season, we were playing kickball with teams. Now, we’re starting to make those good passes, and getting ourselves good shots. The girls realize that when they settle the ball down, they can control the game.”

The win comes on the heels of two dominating victories over the weekend.

On Friday, the Comets topped East St. John 12-1.

Every active Comets senior scored in the game, led by Lubin’s four. Brouwer and Emily Bourgeois scored two each. Kristen Carrier, Kasi Duhe, Cassi Drexel and Brooke Carmouche each scored goals.

On Saturday, the Comets recorded an 11-0 shutout over Academy of Our Lady.

The two goals allowed in three games had been indicative of the strong defense the Comets have played all season long, led by its back row of Bourgeois, Ricki Bratcher and Brouwer.

“Game after game, those three bring a great effort,” Peyton says.
