For many, unfortunately, Christmas spirit begins with Christmas spirits

As we enter the longest holiday season of the year (Thanksgiving through New Year’s), I am reminded that more alcohol is consumed during this time than any other.

In years past, the celebration of the Christmas season started after Thanksgiving. This year, like the last few years, retailers have begun playing Christmas music and advertising Christmas toys and gifts two weeks before Thanksgiving. The marketing idea is to motivate people to get in the buying mood. The problem is that it is a season to be jolly and many people think they need a little help in this area and start celebrating with alcohol a little earlier than usual.

I think most people will agree that the drug problem in America is not getting better. When people think about the drug problem, they immediately think of illegal drugs, but the most abused drug is alcohol.

I would like to share with you the following which I read a few years ago:

I am more powerful that the combined armies of the world;

I have destroyed more men than all the wars of the nation;

I have caused millions of accidents and wrecked more homes than all the floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes put together;

I am the world’s slickest thief. I steal billions of dollars each year;

I find my victims among the rich and poor alike, the young and the old, the strong and the weak;

I loom up to such proportions that I cast a shadow over every field of labor;

I am relentless, insidious, and unpredictable;

I am everywhere — in the home, on the street, in the factory, in the office, on the sea, and in the air;

I bring sickness, poverty, and death;

I give nothing and take all;

I am your worst enemy;

I am ALCOHOL.
