West St. John finished its season on Tuesday with a tough matchup against White Castle, which defeated the Rams 58-23 in a District 9-1A game in Edgard.
Kyla Morris and Ambria Major each scored eight points to lead West St. John (7-10, 1-7).
“We had our chances,” said West St. John coach Lester Smith. “We missed a lot of easy shots. We missed a layup right after winning the tip. It was just a lack of concentration, maybe from them knowing it was likely our last game this season.”
The Bulldogs (12-9, 4-3) are tied for second place in District 9-1A with East Iberville. Ascension Catholic has clinched the district title.
White Castle jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, and led 25-12 at halftime.
The Rams’ offense could never get going in the second half, only scoring 11 points, and the Bulldogs took full advantage by scoring 33 points of their own.
“They mixed it up on us,” Smith said. “They scored on the inside, and from the outside.”
White Castle center Ronquel Gibson led all scorers with 19 points.
After a strong start to the season, injuries and youth took their toll on the Rams, who had no seniors on the roster and only one junior in Major. Major and Morris were the only players with starting experience this year.
Smith says this summer will be a time for his players to apply what they have learned down the stretch.
“Our youth played a part. We just have to get back and work hard to minimize mistakes before next year,” said Smith.
