Robert Warren Messmer, “Uncle Nick,” passed away on Jan. 26, 2009, at age 83.
He was the son of the late Herman Emile Messmer. Sr. and the late Willifred Ax Messmer. He is survived by two sons Irwin Christian and Craig Alan, one daughter Carol Jean Szkutek, three grandchildren Jason, Ryan and Kristen, one great-granddaughter Casey and daughters-in-law Christie C. and Rebecca M. Messmer.
He graduated from Warren Easton High School in 1943 and was a very proud and dedicated Marine serving in the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific Area during World War II. He continued his education at Delgado Trade School.
Robert touched the lives of many people and no one was a stranger to him. His ability to make people laugh in almost any situation along with his outgoing personality and wit endeared him to everyone he met. The times he spent at Uncle Nick’s Camp were among the most enjoyable times of his life, being with his friends he loved the most.
His wish is to have a memorial marker placed in Arlington National Cemetery in his honor. By his request, his body has been donated to the Tulane University Medical School for research.
A memorial celebration in his honor will be scheduled at a later date in Ponchatoula. All family and friends will be invited to attend.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to his caregiver, Mary A. Brown, for her help in keeping him with us for the last two years. His presence will be greatly missed by all, and the memories of him will be instilled in the hearts of all forever.
