Sporting pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness Wednesday night, the Riverside Rebels took down visiting Independence 3-0 in Reserve.
It is Riverside’s second win of the season over Independence, after a 4-3 victory at Independence in the Rebels’ season opener.
Shelby Deslatte scored twice and Jordan Duhon scored another to lead the Rebels to the win.
Riverside coach Stephen Millet credited his team’s defense as being a major factor.
“Their top scorer scored three on us last time. We made it a point to adjust and shut her down,” said Millet. “Because of that and some overall good defensive play, we were able to do some different things.”
Millet said stopping an opposing top scorer has been a big issue this season.
“Most of the time, if we can stop that one scorer up top, we’re doing fine.
“It’s just a matter of recognition,” he said. “It’s a different mindset, with everyone knowing it’s a collective effort to put their skilled players in a tough situation to succeed.”
Deslatte’s first goal came in the first half to give Riverside a 1-0 halftime lead.
Duhon knocked in a goal early in the second half to give the Rebels a little breathing room. Deslatte effectively finished things off when she scored her second goal about midway through the second half, putting Independence in too deep a hole to climb out of.
The night was a success for its cause as well.
Riverside raised over $600 for breast cancer awareness between its boys and girls games.
