EDGARD – Denzel Pierre’s drive and score as time ran out lifted host West St. John to its second win of the season Tuesday, a 46-44 win over Rabouin.

Pierre finished with 14 points, while teammate Dray Joseph tallied 15 for the Rams.

The Rams led by seven in the second half, but Rabouin tied the game at 44 in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter.

With overtime looming, WSJ inbounded the ball and scrambled to set up a game-winner. Pierre took the ball straight to the basket and converted to finish things off in regulation.

”We put it in his hands, and he took over from there,” said WSJ coach Antoine Edwards.

Rabouin led 17-14 at halftime.

Particularly in the second half, Edwards wasn’t happy with his team’s effort defensively. More than anything, he thought a better defensive game would have made a game winning shot unnecessary.

“We kind of played soft at the defensive end,” said Edwards. “We weren’t aggressive enough. The bottom line is that we aren’t there yet. We’ve gotta keep working.”

Thursday saw the Rams host South Lafourche. The Tarpons took advantage of a slow Rams start to build a 28-5 halftime lead.

“We came out really flat,” said Edwards. “No doubt, we played poorly. There was no execution there, and South Lafourche did everything right. I thought our desire to hustle, to get after loose balls, it just wasn’t there.”

Stephen Brignac led WSJ (2-3) with seven points.
