DESTREHAN — Destrehan avenged a 2009 loss last week with a 27-12 win at home over Thibodaux. This week, the Wildcats will attempt to do the same as Karr visits.

Karr took a 38-24 decision last season against the Wildcats. The Cougars will no longer boast quarterback Munchie Legeaux, who accounted for five touchdowns a year ago, but Destrehan coach Chris Stroud said the Cougars are still plenty explosive.

“Their new quarterback (Tollete George) is a good runner and passer, just not as big. They’ve got receivers on the outside who are 6-2, 6-3, so it’s hard to not have one isolated on the outside. We have to stop the passing game.”

Stroud said a major key to accomplishing that task against Karr (1-1) will be the play of his defensive line, particularly the ends.

“We’ve lost containment on quarterbacks the last couple of weeks. We have to play disciplined football against the run.”

Through two weeks, Destrehan (1-1) has allowed just 25 total points. But offensively DHS took a big step on Friday, scoring 27 points.

Taylor Dunn found Rickey Jefferson on the night’s biggest play, a 47-yard touchdown, and Kevin Smith and Mark Trudeaux each added rushing touchdowns.

Trudeaux stepped up after Smith suffered an injury on Friday. Stroud said Smith’s status for the Karr game is pending, but that Trudeaux has affirmed the team’s confidence in him with his play.

“He stepped up. Early on this season, our backs have run very hard for us,” said Stroud.
