East St. John wasted little time establishing their offense Friday night, posting a fifty-five point first half against the Istrouma Indians before going on to notch a 55-6 victory.

After quarterback Darion Monroe ran for a six-yard touchdown on the opening drive, he turned to the passing game, hooking up with wide receiver D’Haquille Williams on a slew of touchdown passes which would seal the game early for the home team.

Williams proved too much for Istrouma, catching seven balls for 269 yards and five touchdowns. He and Monroe exploited an overmatched Indians defense throughout the first two quarters and set the tone for the shellacking that would follow. By half-time, East St. John had pulled their starters on offense. They would not score again, but were able to rest easy in the hands of their capable defense, which allowed a meager six points on the night.

“When you score a lot of points, the key to defense is field position,” said Wildcats coach Larry Dauterive. “We’ve got great speed on defense, and we hit them fast.”

East St. John’s defense proved to be as adept as their offensive counterpart, holding their opponents under 200 yards of total offense. The Wildcat pass rush combined with their coverage to force the Indians into three interceptions on the night, frustrating the Istrouma passing game and allowing only one scoring drive, which occurred late in the fourth quarter.

“It was a David Vs. Goliath match-up,” said Istrouma head coach McKinney Evans. “We’re still little puppies; we’ve got to become big puppies. We got outworked, and we’ve got to take this to another level”.

The second half lacked the big plays found earlier in game, with the Wildcats favoring a more ball control oriented offense. They ran exceedingly well and controlled the clock en route to their impressive victory and a well-deserved celebration. That is, of course, until next week, when East St. John will look to continue their impressive season as they hit the road for a tough game against division 3A St. James.
