The Riverside boys soccer team collected a victory last Wednesday when it defeated Independence in Reserve, 3-0.
The team competed in the Acadiana Copa Classic this past weekend and fell three times to strong competition, losing 4-0 to Neville, 1-0 to Opelousas and 3-0 to Morgan City.
Beau Gaudet scored all three goals for Riverside in its win over Independence.
Millet said the tournament was a positive experience despite the winless mark because it prepared his team for what’s ahead.
“We did alright,” he said. “We played well defensively, but we just couldn’t score goals. We had opportunities but we couldn’t find the net. But it’s good experience. You play in these tournaments to get better.”
Millet said that his offense is trying to find its groove, but some players have found ways to produce. He cited Gaudet – who scored four goals in total last week – and C.J. Edler as two who have stepped up as offensive leaders.
“We’re producing good opportunities,” he said. “But at the same time, if you can’t finish those, you can’t expect to win.”
The Rebel girls collected two victories last week, defeating Haynes 6-2 and Independence 10-0. The Lady Rebels also competed in a tournament over the weekend, at Hahnville, falling to Live Oak, 3-1, Hahnville, 3-0, and Morgan City, 3-1.
Individual scores for the two Rebel victories were not available at press time, but will be included in the next issue.
Taylor Terrio scored each Rebel goal at the Hahnville tournament.
“We’re playing together nicely,” said Millet. “(In the two wins) Shelby Deslatte was a big key. When she goes well, our offense goes well. When your leader is on, the rest of the team seems to follow.”
He said that considering the level of competition at Hahnville, he felt the girl’s team had a strong performance over the weekend.
“They played a great tournament,” he said. “We gave ourselves an opportunity to get back into and win those games against some high level teams. It gives you an opportunity to see the best and compete.”
