Former Ram Comminie commits to play at ULL

West St. John fans certainly haven’t forgotten the exploits of former Rams defensive end Blake Comminie when he played, and more often than not, dominated, at the school.
But L’Observateur’s 2007 Defensive MVP and former Class 1A Outstanding Defensive Player (by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association) isn’t done playing by a longshot. And starting next season, you can see him play at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Comminie has committed to attend ULL after two successful seasons at Mississippi Delta Community College.
Comminie, a 2008 WSJ graduate, led all Mississippi JUCOs last season with 11 sacks in his sophomore campaign as a defensive end/linebacker.
“It’s an opportunity for me to play at the next level and come back closer to home,” said Comminie. “I’m just excited to play at a higher level against some really good Division I schools.”
In his 2007 St. John Parish defensive MVP performance, Comminie recorded 63 tackles with seven sacks and five fumble recoveries Most impressively, he scored seven touchdowns while playing on defense or on special teams – including a four-score night in a 56-6 win over East Iberville. Comminie played two ways and also notched a number of offensive scores that season.
He and a very stout Rams’ defense led the way for West St. John to make the Class 1A championship game, where WSJ would fall to South Plaquemine and come away with state runner-up honors.
He said that he turned things up a notch in his sophomore season at MDCC, knowing a standout performance could earn him the Division I attention he desired.
“I knew I had a shot at a D-I scholarship, and I wanted to make the most of that chance,” he said.
Before committing, the 6-foor-2, 235-pound Comminie said he visited the school multiple times and came away impressed each occasion.
“The campus is really nice and it’s not real big,” he said. “I won’t get real lost there. But I’ve been meeting some good players and real good guys. Just meeting new people is one of the best things I’m looking forward to.”
