Mason Candies (front row, center), a sixth-grader at Lakewood Elementary, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee in late January and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 23rd annual National Geographic Bee. Pictured with Candies are the other nine finalists. They are (front row, left to right) Dawson Lerille, Jade Furl, Mason, Chloe Hogan and Taylor Winn; and (back row, left to right) Logan Tauzin, Dejuante Murray, Dashia Hills, Kaitlyn Miller and Wyatt Vanlangedock. The school winners, including Candies, will now take a written test, and up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state bee April 9.
