The Weeds of Life
Have you ever known anybody to go to the store and buy weed seeds? It sounds silly to do something to intentionally sabotage our garden. We don’t ask for the weeds to invade our lives; they just show up.
What are these weeds in our lives? It may be worry, disobedience or sin. Like the weed, these things pop up in our lives and drain us. Satan doesn’t jump out in front of you and declare, “I’m going to make you sin.” His methods are much more deceitful than that. He sneaks in gradually and plants his weed seeds. Deep down we may know it is wrong, but it seems so harmless. The once beautiful weed will then start to take over and choke the good things in people’s lives. An alcoholic’s road to destruction begins with just one drink.
Rather than pulling the weed out as soon as it pops up, we begin to entertain thoughts of the sin and more likely that is when we fall into its trap. That one drink is now a life lost due to drunk driving.
So how do we pull out the weeds in our lives? Timothy 2:22 instructs us to “Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” Notice it did not say casually stroll away. When this verse says flee, it means run. Arm yourself with the Word of God. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in Matthew 4, He responded each time by quoting scripture. The Word of God will prove to be your most powerful gardening tool. Know that God has equipped you with all you need to pluck out the weeds in your garden.
I Corinthians 10:13 reassures us with these words: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
The next time you see a weed pop up in your life, be careful not to water the weed. Pull it out quickly before it takes root. They may look good, but they will eventually choke the life out of you. When the garden of your life is free of weeds, God will produce fruit that will feed and nourish you and everyone you encounter.
God Bless!
