Lutcher’s season came to an end Thursday night at the hands of Karr, which captured a 20-7 victory at Behrman Stadium in a Class 4A state semifinal game.

Karr advances to the Class 4A championship game next weekend, where it will face Neville.

The game was not without controversy. One of the night’s big plays came when Cougars’ punt returner Jarrell Bennett picked up a ball on a Lutcher punt that officials ruled had not been downed and ran it back for a score, after the Bulldogs’ coverage unit had already begun walking back to the sideline.

That play extended a 13-7 Karr lead to 20-7 with just under two minutes in the third quarter.

Karr’s defense did the rest. The Cougars held Lutcher to 130 total yards in the game

Lutcher drew first blood in the game, leading 7-0 after quarterback Ruston Matherne rushed for a 13-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.

Karr pulled within one before halftime on their own quarterback’s rushing exploits, as Devante Noll’s 1-yard touchdown run made it 7-6.

Noll struck again in the third quarter, scoring on a 23-yard run to cap his team’s opening drive of the second half.

Lutcher finished its season with a 12-2 record.
