The St. Charles Humane Society, in cooperation with St. Charles Parish Animal Control, is sponsoring half-price adoption fees of $40 for cats and kittens at the St. Charles Parish animal shelter through Aug. 31.

The special, limited-time offer comes as the shelter’s feline population numbers approximately 130.

According to Animal Control Director Angela Robert, the new facility’s success in keeping disease under control has led to an increase in the cat and kitten population.

“The new shelter is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do,” she said. “We’ve been able to save more animals and keep them happy and healthy, and we’ve also been able to house them due to an increase in space. But now these highly adoptable kitties need great new homes.”

Mid-summer is also prime “kitten season,” in which there is a natural uptick in numbers of litters born to unspayed female cats. This particular kitten season has been more productive due to the previous milder winter, Robert said.

The animal shelter is located at 921 Rue LaCannes in the Dufresne Business Park in Luling. An additional adoption day will be held at the shelter from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Aug. 18. Cats from the St. Charles shelter are also available during normal business hours at PetSmart of Metairie, located at 6851 Veterans Memorial Blvd.
