EDGARD — Jarius Moll pitched a complete game three-hitter and Steven Brignac drove in the game-winning RBI as West St. John came away with a 2-1 District 8-1A victory art Ascension Catholic Friday.
“We were coming off of a 15-1 win, and like I told the guys, it was a matter of staying focused,” said West St. John coach Ronald August. “We sent a senior out there to the mound, and Jarius Moll really delivered for us. We played solid defense and made plays behind him, and it added up to a win.”
West St. John (9-2, 2-1) fell behind when the Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the 5th inning, scoring on a passed ball.
The Rams answered immediately. In the top of the sixth, Austin Howard and Lawrence Williams each singled to set the table for WSJ.
Moll tied the game with a double, setting up Brignac to break the tie with an RBI single. Moll retired the side in order in the sixth and Ascension Catholic wouldn’t challenge again.
Moll finished with nine strikeouts.
“We’re on a pretty good roll right now,” said August. “This district is going to come down to pitching. In the close ones we’ve had, we had Austin and Jarius go complete games against St. John-Plaquemine and Ascension Catholic. Their guys are doing the same. And I see that continuing.”
The Rams defeated East Iberville 15-1 last Tuesday, a game that ended in five innings by the 10-run rule.
Dontre Turner led the offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Howard was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Williams went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Turner and Anfernee Lumar combined to throw five innings of two-hit ball. They struck out a combined 13 batters.
The Rams’ lone district loss came in their 8-1A opener, 3-2 against St. John-Plaquemine.
Howard went a complete game and struck out 12 in the loss. He allowed just two hits.
Brignac and Turner each drove in runs.
