LAPLACE – A 22-year veteran of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office was part of a class of officers from across the country to recently complete the FBI’s National Training Academy in Quantico, Va.

Sgt. Troy Cassioppi, a Uniform Patrol Division deputy, was one of 246 officers to complete the 10-week FBI training program last month. Cassioppi joined St. Charles Sheriff’s Capt. Kenneth DeCorte in representing the River Parishes at the academy. The session consisted of men and women in civilian and military law enforcement from 48 states, as well as 24 international students.

The National Academy Program offers advanced investigative, management and fitness training for selected officers having proven records as professionals with their agencies. On average, officers selected have about 19 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to service in executive-level positions.

The program is internationally known for its academic excellence and training is provided by FBI Academy instructional staff, special agents and other staff members with advanced degrees. Many of the instructors are recognized internationally in their fields of expertise.

Cassioppi said in a statement that he is extremely grateful and thanks former Sheriff Wayne L. Jones for affording him the opportunity to attend the program. He said he looks forward to current Sheriff Mike Tregre allowing him the chance to continue using his new skills. 

“Staying current with the newest developments in crime fighting and investigation is extremely important for public safety effectiveness in St. John Parish,” Cassioppi said.

Cassioppi has been a patrol officer and Traffic Division commander during his time with the Sheriff’s Office. He is currently assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division.
