LAPLACE – Although the recently approved education reform package proposed by Gov. Bobby Jindal is not seen as a popular piece of legislation as a whole, there are many residents of the River Parishes who find favor with one element of the plan.

Changes in the way teachers are evaluated in the classroom garnered 90 percent of the vote in last week’s L’Observateur online poll of the best elements of the reform measure. Others who voted were in favor of the expanded voucher program, which allows students from failing schools to attend participating private and parochial schools for free, and the changes in the powers of school boards and school superintendents. Both options garnered 4 percent of the vote.

A complete breakdown of results is as follows:

• 2 percent of respondents chose, “tenure reform for employees.”

• 4 percent of respondents chose, “voucher program.”

• 90 percent of respondents chose, “changes in teacher evaluations.”

• 4 percent of respondents chose, “changes in school board/superintendant powers.”
