Tessie DiFulco, a disability advocate, visited the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders of St. Peter Chanel School. She spoke to the students about disability awareness. The students listened as she told her story of being in a car accident, suffering a brain injury and her recovery. The students were able to ask questions about her accident and recovery.

Her presentation emphasized that people with disabilities are just like those without disabilities and that everyone wants to be treated with dignity and respect. DiFulco offered great tips on how to show dignity and respect to those with a disability:

• Listen attentively when speaking with a person with a disability

• Never pretend to understand when you are having difficulty understanding

• When offering assistance, ask and wait for an answer; never assume

She urged the middle school students to be a disability advocate.
