KILLONA – Early Friday morning State Fire Marshal investigators responded to a residential fire in the community of Killona which claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman and her 3-year-old granddaughter.

Just before 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Killona firefighters were dispatched to a residence at 156 Killona Drive in response to a medical call for an unresponsive female. Upon their arrival, firefighters discovered that residence was on fire. Firefighters very quickly extinguished the blaze and while doing so discovered two deceased individuals within the home. Fire officials requested assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the circumstances of the fire.

The bodies of 54-year-old Catherine Isaac and her 3-year-old granddaughter, Kamri Ferria, were recovered from the master bedroom of the home. Fire investigators have determined that the fire originated from within that room where both victims appeared to be sleeping. There were no working smoke detectors present in the residence.

The specific area of origin was in a corner of the master bedroom where investigators discovered a number of electrical components. Investigators have not yet determined the ignition source, and the investigation continues. Autopsies are being performed on the victims.

State Fire Marshal Butch Browning stated, “We are once again investigating a tragic fire, with multiple fatalities, occurring in a residence without smoke detection. Let this be a wakeup call as to the importance of these lifesaving devices.”
