NEW ORLEANS — Over 100 boys and girls track and field teams competed at the Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic at Tad Gormley Stadium over the weekend, with a number of East St. John Wildcats excelling at the event.

East St. John’s Dontrell Allen earned fourth place in the boys 100 with a time of 10.66, just behind third place Kirk Merritt of Destrehan (10.66).

The East St. John 4×100 boys relay team (Dwayne Barribin, Allen, Diontra Rixner, Jarrod Jackson) finished sixth with a time of 43.96, and the 4×200 team (Javon Brown, Allen, Rixner, Jackson) took fifth with a time of 1:31.68. The 4×800 relay team (Crockett, Cross, Cain, Davis) also took sixth with a time of 8:38.90.

Hahnville’s Brandon Singleton won the boys 110 meter hurdles event with a time of 14.10. He placed second in the 300 meter hurdles with a mark of 39.05.

Hoover (Ala.) won the boys and girls team events, becoming only the second team in the 23-year history of the event to do that.

ESJ GIRLS WIN DERBINGNY RELAYS — The East St. John Ladycats captured last week’s Derbingny Relays, with Dejanne Williams, Jirah Brown and Ryanesha Denet leading the way to victory with a trio of first place finishes.

Denet earned first place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:31.68. Brown took first in the high jump with a mark of 4-08, and Williams captured the shot put with a mark of 28-10.

East St. John girls track and field coach Mark Creecy held part of his squad out as it also competed at the Sugar Bowl meet over the weekend, and he said the success at Lutcher was good for a number of his younger athletes.

“I was very happy with how we competed,” Creecy said. “We’ve been able to establish a lot of depth on our team this year.

“The way district is, we’re going to need to be able to score in all events if we want to win it, and we’ve had some girls really step it up in the field. That’s encouraging.”

Tanisha Spencer, Ladeja Harris, Troynisha Gerard, Kori Gray, Kenyatte Cannon, Melinda Perrilloux and Angelique Johnson each captured top three finishes in their respective events for ESJ.
