RESERVE — Dozens of St. James Parish young people continued to jump start their industrial education through recent hands-on training at South Central Louisiana Technical College.
On March 19, 42 ninth grade students from the St. James Career and Technical Center visited the College’s River Parishes Campus to gain educational experiences in the Process Technology Department.
The students were divided into three groups. Process Technology Instructors Wayne Adams and David Hymel, as well as the Department Head Jerry Layne, led the groups through actual plant operations, a classroom presentation, a view of the climbing tower and virtual plant simulations.
“This partnership of participating schools, industry and South Central Louisiana Technical College gives Jump Start students an invaluable experience that we are happy to be a part of,” Layne said.
The site visit was organized by SCLTC adjunct chemistry professor Kermit Gauthreaux, CTC math instructor Kelly MaGendie and Aaron Meyer, CTC civics instructor and Jump Start administrator.
The Career and Technical students are enrolled in the technical career “Jump Start” program, which is sponsored by NEXT 25, a co-operative consortium of St. James Parish community and industrial organizations.
The Jump Start program is a leader in terms of developing graduation pathways and a new generation of Career Readiness courses, college officials said.
