SHREVEPORT – Led by Sean Flynn, the Riverside golf team finished in fifth place at this week’s Division III State Golf Tournament, the Rebels’ best finish in the last decade of play.
Flynn posted a two day total of 154 (80 , 74) to pace the Rebels, who posted a team score of 675 at East Ridge Country Club in Shreveport.
Calvary Baptist captured the Division III state crown with a dominating two-day score of 583. Loyola Prep was second with score of 630. University (657) Northlake Christian (668), Riverside, Notre Dame (679) Menard (682) and Newman (690) rounded out the field.
Individually, Flynn finished tied for 7th place overall.
“Sean played very well on a very difficult golf course,” said Riverside coach Roy Aubert. “He did a great job of course management and club selection on both days and made more putts on Tuesday.”
Aubert said Flynn came close to pushing for an even higher finish.
“He putted for a lot of birdies, and just missed a little long or a little short on day one,” he said. “On day two, he played really, really well in all aspects.”
Cory Costanza posted a score of 85 on Monday and came back with a 78 on Tuesday for a two day total of 163. Costanza finished in 17th place.
“Cory had a little trouble hitting the fairways from the tee box on Monday,” said Aubert. “He did much better with his driver on Tuesday and a few more putts fell in for him.”
Deuce Wallace posted a two day score of 176 (86, 90), playing at less than 100 percent due to illness.
“He was really sick for 3 days,” said Aubert. “He played Monday with a throat infection and a temperature of 101. Tuesday he feeling a little better but it was very difficult for him to walk that hilly golf course in his condition.”
Aubert said he thought entering the weekend that his Rebels had a chance to finish as high as fourth.
But though Riverside came up short of that mark by seven strokes, he was pleased with the final result, both at the state match and the season in general.
“When you look at the field we were in, there are a lot of great golfers, a lot of great teams,” said Aubert. “It was a great finish for our guys.”
