Twelve teachers and three counselors from St. Charles Parish Public Schools completed School-to-Career summer internships at several local industries in order to bring their experiences back into their classrooms.
The hosts of the summer internships were Destrehan Plantation, Norco Manufacturing Complex, St. Charles Parish Hospital and St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office. Career Development Facilitators Aurora Romero at Hahnville High School and Stefanie Ward at Destrehan High School assisted the teachers in the development of the lesson plans.
The lesson plan titles included “Law Enforcement,” “Algebraic Proportions and Sequences in Medical Field,” “Careers in Our Community,” “River Parishes Tourist Attractions,” “Learning is Lifelong,” “Crimes Past and Present,” “Name a Health Career” and “Exploring Careers in Hospitality and Tourism.”
The teachers learned about the various careers associated with each industry including the organization of the industry, the education and/or certification requirements, the occupational outlook, the working conditions and the advancement opportunities.  Following the internships, the teachers and counselors developed lesson plans integrating their experiences, the District Learner Goals and the Common Core Curriculum. The participants also earned continuing learning units.
