LULING – The St. Charles Parish School Board unanimously selected Felecia Gomez-Walker as the new superintendent of St. Charles Parish Public Schools.
Gomez-Walker has been employed with the school system for more than 36 years. She is a graduate of Hahnville High School.
Gomez-Walker is taking over for former Superintendent Rodney Lafon, who retired from the position effective July 1. Lafon led the school system for 18 years.
“St. Charles Parish Schools has had tremendous impact on the quality of life in St. Charles Parish,” said Gomez-Walker upon accepting the position.
Her praise extended to the School Board and the amicable and speedy selection process through which she was chosen.
“Whatever success I achieve from now on will be a result of that collaborative teamwork,” she said.
School Board member John Smith, who has served on the board for many years, was given the lead in the search process because of his extensive experience. When yielded the floor, Smith chose to highlight the historical significance of the selection. He said that 30 years ago the board made history when it saw the election of its first African-American member. Now, the district has its first female superintendent.
“I believe that is very significant,” said Smith.
The School Board also acknowledged the dedication of the 19-member Citizen Advisory Committee — made up of a wide swath of people including students, educators, industrial representatives and retirees. The committee met with all the applicants and also recommended Gomez-Walker for the position.
Gomez-Walker, a resident of Hahnville, began her career with the school system in 1976, working her way up the ranks. She served as assistant superintendent of secondary schools and quality assurance since 2008.
Prior to this assignment, she served as assistant superintendent of secondary schools and curriculum, instruction and assessment for two years.
Gomez-Walker has also served as a teacher at Allemands Elementary School and principal at A.A. Songy Kindergarten Center and Luling Elementary School.
Gomez-Walker will begin duties as superintendent upon successful completion of a contract between her and the School Board. Contract terms are still being finalized, and James Melohn will continue to serve as interim superintendent until a contract has been signed by the Board and Gomez-Walker.
Gomez-Walker was one of three finalists for the position. The other finalists were Joey Comeaux, who is currently employed with Assumption Parish Public Schools, and Dr. Rick Williams, who works with a Texas regional education oversight body.
