Meeting new people in different ways

It never ceases to amaze me who or what God will use to reach people. Two weeks before Thanksgiving, I received a phone call from someone named Hannon. “I need help,” he said, “and someone gave me your number.” “Who was it?” I asked. “Don’t know,” he said. “Another fellow and I were drunk on the corner of Bourbon and St. Louis Street.”
A man stopped and asked if we needed help. He also asked us where we lived. I told him, “Under the bridge in New Orleans.” He seemed to care about us, spoke to us without preaching and gave me a copy of a daily devotional. “If you promise to read it, I’ll get you a hotel room for tonight.”
The devotional, “The Word for You Today,” is a publication of which I get 200 copies every three months and give them out at random. On the front is a label with my name, address and phone number.
Hannon continued, “I thought he would get us a room at a cheap motel, but instead he put us up at the Marriot. When I woke up, I decided to call you.
“I need help!” he repeated.
I made arrangements for him to go to a Christian program in Bastrop, La., and agreed to buy him a bus ticket. He decided not to go.
The first week of December, while greeting the new clients at a drug treatment facility, I met Hannon. During the 28 days he was there, I found out that he was 52 years old and had lived under the bridge for a couple of years before he was arrested for second degree battery and sent to prison for 2 1/2 years. Upon his release, he went back to his old ways and found himself homeless again, sleeping under the bridge.
He wanted to know who the fellow was that put him up at the Marriot and gave him the book. “I have no idea,” I said, “but I’m as curious as you are.”
Does it really make a difference who the unidentified minister of mercy was? No, not at all. The bottom line is that God’s message was delivered to a lost soul.
I’m reminded that the Scripture says, “God’s Word will not come back void.”
