Keller: Impossible to be hateful when you’re grateful

In a phone discussion this week with my friend Billy Broussard from Garyville, he shared that he needed to be more grateful.

I told him years ago in a peer support group, I remember the slogan, “It’s impossible to be hateful when you’re grateful.”

After we hung up, I questioned myself if I was truly grateful for all that God has blessed me. To be honest, I take a lot of granted.

I began to think of things for which I was most grateful. After a few minutes, I realized that I had many reasons to be thankful.

My family is my most treasured possession. Jeanne and I were blessed with four children, one boy and three girls.

They are all unselfish, get along very well and have always respected us. They are all married and have given us 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren (expecting our 12th next month).

Proverbs 17:6 reads: “Children’s children are the crown of old men and the glory of children are their fathers.”

Our youngest grandchild, Kameron, is 19 years old and is at Baton Rouge Community College. I didn’t realize how much of a void it would be for our last grandchild to graduate from high school.

I miss the fact that we really aren’t needed that much anymore.

Monday, I decided to invite my other three grandsons, Geoff, David and Kane to lunch. I’m sure they didn’t need to be with me, but I needed to be with them.

It turned out good and I was grateful for that get-together. I encouraged them to keep in touch with each other and to always remember that the secret to living is giving of themselves to others.

I’m also grateful for God’s ministry of Get High on Life in which I’m only a laborer. I’m grateful for a Godly wife, my true friends who love me in spite of myself, but most of all, I’m grateful for my salvation.

It’s amazing what a grateful attitude will do. As I wrote this article, I was positive about my future and didn’t think of anything negative.
