LAPLACE — The public is invited to learn more about the Literacy Clinic, an educational initiative spearheaded by the Honorable Nghana Lewis, during a community meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 23 at the St. John the Baptist Parish Library – LaPlace Branch, located at 2920 US- 51.
The Literacy Clinic pilot launched locally in 2021, and the legislature has allocated funding for the program. Grades K-2 have been identified for services because this is the age where children are learning to read, laying the foundation for them to read to learn. According to Lewis, studies indicate that children not reading at grade level by third grade are at a greater likelihood of entering the criminal justice system.
