LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic won with ease in its first softball game of the season, then followed up with what coach Ty Monica called a “character building” victory.

It adds up to a strong start for the now 2-0 Comets, who banked an 11-0 win over Covington Tuesday and a 7-6 victory over Dominican Thursday, both victories coming at home.

“We’ve been swinging the bats well, which is good to see early in the season,” Monica said. “Usually, at this point your defense and pitching is ahead of the offense, and it’s kind of the reverse for us right now.

“Anytime you can start with a win or two, it’s a real positive.”

Against Dominican, SCC was locked in a 6-6 tie entering the seventh inning.

“Fortunately, we had two seniors coming up back to back,” Monica said.

Those seniors were Kaitlyn Lowry and Paige Williams. Lowry got on and reached second base and Williams drove her home to plate the winning run.

Lowry went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Williams was 2 for 4 with a RBI and a double.

“Those girls have been there before and had success,” Monica said. “They’re two we’ll be leaning on a lot this year.”

Morgan Nobile was also 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored.

Jade Brady (2-0) earned the win, going the complete game. She allowed six runs, three of those earned, while striking out seven.

Against Covington, Destiny Wesley led the way, socking a three-run home run in the third inning that all but put things away. Wesley finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored, and Monica said the Comets expect another big year from the junior third baseman.

Lowry went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Brady was 2 for 2 with a double and run scored.

The St. Charles softball and baseball teams are hosting their annual tournaments this weekend. The softball team will host Hannan at 10 a.m. today, then will take on Chalmette at 4 p.m.
