Serving the residents of District III, in St. John the Baptist Parish, has been an incredible honor; and it’s a privilege I am seeking to continue.  With these sentiments, I, Tammy Houston, proudly announce my candidacy for reelection.  As the incumbent for the past three and a half years, I have worked diligently and tirelessly, through my voting record and community service efforts to improve the District and our parish.  I have relished the relationships I have established with the residents and am proud of the accomplishments achieved during my tenure.

 

These past years saw our parish impacted by COVID-19, which shut down our nation, state and parish physically and economically; however, our government remained steadfast in our resilience and determination to sustain our parish as we suffered insurmountable losses. I supported all of the president and governor’s orders to protect the safety and well-being of our residents.

 

In the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic, our community dealt with the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Ida.  I supported and voted for all legislations related to emergency aid, funding and contracts benefiting and impacting our residents, including all levee protection and restoration policies essential for rebuilding. I assisted with the distribution of forms and publishing of schedules of FEMA and state officials who were in our parish assisting with the distribution of federal and state aid to our community.  It was part of my daily task to participate in the delivery of protective medical gear, distributions, including the delivery of food, supplies and hot meals to the elderly and disadvantaged in the parish.

 

I was immensely proud of the strength and tenacity shown in the process of restoring our parish and meeting the needs of our community as I was actively present in the daily, around the clock, strategy meetings with parish, state and federal officials gathering in our Emergency Preparedness offices.

 

Over the past few years, we have vastly improved our recreation department.  I have worked with parish administration in securing funds from local industries to add new equipment and enhancements to existing structures at the Belle Point Park located in District III.  We have improved our facilities and have had record numbers of participants in our recreational programs.

 

As a native of Reserve, I am the daughter of former educators, Villere (Billy) and Cynthia Bossier Houston. A proud graduate of East. St. John high school and an alumnus of the University of New Orleans and Southern University A&M, I hold a bachelor’s of communication and a master’s of public administration.

 

I have spent my entire adult life as a public servant, having, spent 29 ½ years with the St. John Parish Library system serving in various leadership positions.  I retired in 2017 as the assistant director. A proponent of education and a firm believer that a strong school system is paramount for a solid economy, I am a member of the non-profit St. John Parish Education Foundation.  The foundation has provided scholarships to fund the certification of fifty St. John Parish School employees and awarded six college scholarships to seniors enrolled in our public school system.  Additionally, I spent 12 years on the parish’s civil service board.

 

I humbly ask for your support, as I continue to seek to serve in the capacity of council representative for District III.  I meet the qualifications as a competent and experienced official with the knowledge and determination to persevere in rebuilding and upgrading our infrastructure with improvements to our drainage, water systems, roads and other fundamental and recreational needs.  One of the key components of a council person is to be a voice for the people. I ask that the voters allow me to continue to be your voice; as, I respectfully seek to be reelected by the residents, of District III.  Throughout my term in office, we have made a difference. “Let’s Keep Making A Difference”.
