Family history and my early years without sunscreen have resulted in several precancerous areas of my skin requiring attention. Liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze (although it burns a little) the cells. I visit a dermatologist regularly to stay on top of any suspicious spots. I thought my last appointment would be brief.

“Any areas of concern?’ the dermatologist asked.

“Nothing,” I said. “I think I’m good.”

“Well, there’s a spot here, and this one there…” He knew exactly what to look for and took care of what I had overlooked.

It was an all too familiar scene. Not in the doctor’s office, but in the early hours of the morning when I sit quietly before God and sometimes pray Psalm 139:23, 24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Even on the days when I think all is well, God will bring to mind an area that needs my attention. It’s not always something I said or did. Sometimes it’s a thought or a motive that only God knows. He knows exactly what to look for and leads me to take care of what I often overlook. Whatever the issue, I want it corrected before it grows.

At no other time am I as grateful for God Who not only points out my sin but offers forgiveness.
