Roland Joseph “Saucisse” Clement was born on September 18, 1928 and was a lifelong resident of LaPlace. After 94 beautiful years, he passed on into his eternal life on Wednesday, February 8, 2023.
He was the beloved husband of 70 years to Gayle Hahn Clement. He is survived by his wife and four children, Cornel (Callie), Darnel Usry (Larry), Crystal and Dane (Ann). His legacy will live on in his grandchildren, Cain and Russ Clement, Kristina Colletta Haydel (Lee) and Zachary and Brennan (Jeni) Clement, as well as his great-grandchildren, Colette Haydel and Jude Clement. He is also survived by step-grandsons Jeremy and Donald Usry and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents Emile and Marcelle Millet Clement, brothers Vernon, Guy and baby Claude Clement, and his granddaughter Anna Colletta.
Roland served in the army and had the privilege of playing football, baseball and basketball to entertain and boost morale of his fellow troops. Sporting events and competitions gave occasions for he and his wife Gayle to travel the United States as he competed in Senior Olympics for many years. He could be seen practicing throwing horseshoes by those passing by as he fine tuned his skills.
He was proud to be one of the founders of St. John Memorial Gardens, servicing his community’s cemetery needs and memorializing the lives of loved ones. Roland retired from Dupont after 26 years of working in the maintenance department.
He thoroughly enjoyed a good party and in honor of that, we ask you to join us in the celebration of his life.
