SCSO warns of bail scam

Recently, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a scam where the victim was told her grandson was in jail and needed cash sent for bail. These types of scams often include asking the victim to purchase gift cards or to mail /ship large sums of money for bail. You cannot post someone’s bail with gift cards, and you should never mail/ship large sums of money.
If you receive a call that a loved one is in jail, try to contact them directly. In this instance, the grandson was safe and well. This made the grandparent realize it was a scam.
This victim was fortunate to get the package of money back before it was delivered to the scammers. This does not happen often, and most times the money is not recovered.
