RESERVE — Larry Smith, 66, was born in Laurel, Miss., at Masonite Hospital.

The son of sharecroppers in Wayne County, Smith’s father served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

After finishing his schooling, Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17, starting a path that led him to serve during the Vietnam War.

After basic training, Smith went to Fort Gordon, where he completed Advanced Individual Training before being deployed to serve in Vietnam.

While in Vietnam, Smith was employed as a water supply truck operator, a crucial part of daily operations. Smith was often dodging enemy gunfire.

In 1971, Smith was honorably discharged after serving four years in service.

Once home, Smith reunited with his sweetheart, Elaine Knoblock, and they were married on May 29, 1971.

Smith eventually went to work for the Quickquete Cement driving 18-wheelers — his duties were to deliver pallets of ready mix concrete bags. After dropping off one load, Smith suffered a heart attack and stroke while on the road.

He was able to maneuver his rig to a safe stop, and because of his condition, he was placed in the care of the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve, where he receives expert nursing care and rehabilitation help.

The Veterans home is always looking for volunteers to help in various roles from activities, room visits and talent shows.
