EDGARD – At a hearing on March 14, 2022, Gavin Bourgeois was found to be a three-time repeat offender under the Louisiana Habitual Offender Law. On March 23, 2022, Bourgeois was sentenced to 85 years with the Department of Corrections for the charge of Armed Robbery with a Firearm, 25 years for Carjacking, and 20 years for Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon to be served concurrently.

On April 15, 2021, after three days of trial, it took a St. John the Baptist Parish Jury just under an hour to return a unanimous verdict and convict Defendant Galvin Bourgeois of LaPlace of armed robbery, carjacking, and felon in possession of a firearm. The trial took place in Division C of the 40^th Judicial District Court and was presided over by the Honorable Judge J. Sterling Snowdy. Following the trial, Bourgeois was sentenced to 35 years for Armed Robbery with a Firearm, 10 years for Carjacking, and 15 years for Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

The St. John the Baptist Parish District Attorney filed a Multiple Offender Bill, which under Louisiana’s Habitual Offender Law increases the minimum and maximum penalties for repeat offenders. The prosecutors were successful in proving that Galvin Bourgeois was a triple offender and the Honorable Judge J. Sterling Snowdy re-sentenced Bourgeois in accordance with the increased penalties. The sentence was increased for the charge of Armed Robbery with a Firearm from 35 years to 85 years with the Department of Corrections, for the charge of Carjacking from 10 years to 25 years with the Department of Corrections, and the charge of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon from 15 years to 20 years with the Department of Corrections.

The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Bridget A. Dinvaut’s Office with Assistant District Attorney Henri P. Dufresne leading the prosecution and assisted by Assistant District Attorney Christopher Cortez.

The crime occurred on May 6, 2018. On said date, Galvin Bourgeois participated in an armed robbery of a victim, wherein he took cash and a 2008 Toyota Corolla. During the robbery, Bourgeois and his co-defendant beat the victim, fractured his eye orbit, and left him on the side of Old Highway 51 lying in a ditch. The victim, who struggled with the assailants during the robbery, was able to positively identify Bourgeois from a photographic lineup. After the robbery, Bourgeois took the victim’s vehicle to three different parishes where other crimes occurred. Bourgeois was subsequently apprehended by U.S. Marshalls after wrecking and abandoning the victim’s vehicle at a local gas station.
