March 2 is Dr. Seuss’s birthday! What better way to celebrate than to read? Did you know Dr. Seuss would have been 118 this year? While he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the pages of his books. He forever changed the way children’s books were written and continues to inspire generations today. So, this month, read Dr. Seuss’s books, use your imagination and be silly! St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries has a huge collection of Dr. Seuss’s books for patrons to check out. The Roland Borne, Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) will have Dr. Seuss kits for children, ages 3 and up to take home all month long. The Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) invites children, ages 3 and up to make photobooth props, featuring beloved characters of Dr. Seuss. There will also be a story time dedicated to Dr. Seuss’s books and crafts on Wednesday, March 2 at the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve).

March is Women’s History Month, which is dedicated to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States history. The Norris J. Millet, Sr. Library (Central) will celebrate by highlighting women authors and their notable novels throughout the month. Take and make bags will also be provided at the Reserve Library for teens to make Black Girl Magic canvases. The Reserve Library invites women to pick up grab and go bags to make Silhouette Art. Supplies will be available from Saturday, March 5 through Saturday, March 12. The Garyville Library will create videos showcasing women in STEM, as well as women who were a part of the Civil Rights movement. Want to make a picture frame celebrating your favorite female? The Edgard Library will have supplies for pick-up from Monday, March 7 through Friday, March 11. The Edgard Library will also display popular short stories by women authors.

Story Time will be held for children and their parents every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Reserve Library. Outdoor Story Time will also be held at local parks in St. John the Baptist Parish weekly. These weekly programs are for young children and their parents or caretakers to interact in a comfortable setting. Each session will include stories, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities. Children, ages 5 and up are invited to create 3D Paper Shamrocks to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Grab and go bags will be available from Monday, March 7 through Thursday, March 17. This month’s Make Shoppe will feature Decorative Easter Plates. Adult patrons can pick up take and make bags from Wednesday, March 9 through Wednesday, March 16. Teens will create Galaxy Easter Eggs for March’s Smart Art. Teens are invited to stop by from Tuesday, March 15 through Tuesday, March 22. All supplies will be available for pick up at the Reserve Library.

Spectacular Science will be held virtually. Teens will be able to create a liquid rainbow in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Obscure Reading will feature “11/22/63” by Stephen King and “The Mind Connection” by Joyce Meyers. Join us bi-weekly on Facebook for a synopsis of each book. Teens can create emoji felt pillows by picking up craft bags from Saturday, March 12 through Saturday, March 19. An “Among Us” spaceman craft can also be created by picking up supplies from Sunday, March 20 through Sunday, March 27. All supplies will be available for pick up at the Reserve Library.

The Frazee-Harris Memorial Library will host virtual story time weekly. A presentation on ebooks will be featured in celebration of National Read an Ebook Week on Friday, March 11. National Pi Day is celebrated on Monday, March 14. Join us in creating pi day bracelets from Monday, March 14 through Thursday, March 31. Teens can also learn how to make a spring mocktail.
