Laplace – On February 14, 2022, shortly after 2:30 am, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a two vehicle crash on I-55 North, approximately four miles north of I-10. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 54-year-old Dwayne Robert of Hahnville.

The initial investigation revealed that Robert was driving a 2021 Jeep Gladiator north on I-55 in the left lane, approaching the rear of a street sweeping convoy. The convoy was traveling at a low speed and the rear most vehicle, a dump truck, had an impact absorber mounted to its rear as well as a functioning lighted arrow board. As Robert approached the rear of the convoy, he attempted to change into the right lane in front of an 18-wheeler.   In doing so, the front of the Jeep struck the impact absorber. After the initial impact, the Jeep rotated before striking the side of the dump truck.

Robert was ejected during the crash, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Seatbelt use and impairment are unknown. Routine toxicology samples were taken and will be submitted for analysis as a part of the ongoing investigation.

Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Troopers urge citizens to remember that Louisiana’s “Move Over” law keeps EVERYONE safe. The “Move Over” requirement applies not only to first responders such as law enforcement, ambulance, and fire/rescue crews, but also to highway workers, tow and recovery truck operators, and any vehicle utilizing hazard/warning lights.
