RESERVE — Riverside banked two more wins last week to move to 4-3 this season, riding strong defense and some offensive firepower fueled by Caitlin Roussel and Taylor Aubert.

The Rebels got back to back shutouts, taking wins over Runnels, 1-0, and Catholic Pointe-Coupee, 4-0. Aubert scored the lone goal against Runnels, while she and Roussel each scored two against CPC.

The Rebels had to overcome the loss of goalkeeper MacKenzie Saucier-Meyer to defeat Catholic Pointe-Coupee.

Saucier-Meyer left the team’s previous game after suffering a leg injury that required stitches. Sharon Orellana filled in at goalkeeper and secured the shutout.

Riverside coach Mert Deger praised the efforts of both goalkeepers — Saucier-Meyer returned to earn her own shutout in the Runnels game.

He also noted Roussel, a senior, has stepped up her play in recent games.

“She’s beginning to play like herself again,” Deger said. “Cookie (Roussel’s nickname) has really taken control of that midfield position.

“She’s giving us the production we’ve come to expect from her.”

The win over Point-Coupee came on a wet day and muddy field. Deger said his team adapted to the conditions by asserting themselves as the more aggressive side.

“I thought we did a nice job controlling the ball and the game,” Deger said.

“Taylor had another strong game for us. She’s having quite a breakout year.”
