Marrero – On October 17, 2021 around 9:40 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA 3134 (Leo Kenner/Lafitte Pkwy) near Cascade Drive in Marrero. The crash ultimately claimed the lives of 32-year-old Jose Hurst of Gretna and 29-year-old Overland Tart of Harvey.
The initial investigation revealed that Hurst was driving a 2006 GMC Envoy the wrong way on LA 3134, northbound in the southbound left lane. At the same time, Tart was driving a 2014 Dodge Charger south in the southbound left lane on LA 3134. As both vehicles approached the area of the Cascade Drive intersection, the Envoy collided head-on with the Charger.
Hurst and Tart were unrestrained at the time of the crash, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment on the part of Hurst and Tart is suspected and routine toxicology testing will be completed as a part of the ongoing investigation.
Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. Impairment continues to be a leading cause of fatal crashes. Have a plan and designate a driver before you decide to drink. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seatbelt greatly reduces the chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Having a plan and making safe decisions could be the difference for tomorrow.
