LAPLACE — A Texas man was killed Thursday following a wreck in St. John the Baptist Parish, authorities said.

Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a one-car, fatal crash on Interstate 10 west at mile post 198 shortly after 4 p.m.

The crash claimed the life of 25-year-old Jorge Garcia Martinez of Hidalgo, Texas.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Martinez was traveling west on I-10 and attempted to pass a vehicle when he lost control of his 2007 Ford,” State Police spokeswoman Melissa Matey said. “The Ford traveled off the roadway into the tree line, and Martinez was ejected from the vehicle. Martinez was pronounced dead on the scene.”

Martinez was not wearing a seat belt, authorities said, and impairment is unknown pending an autopsy.

The crash remains under investigation.
