EDGARD — In the school’s effort to make the love of reading contagious, West St. John High School in Edgard dedicated Sept. 2-5 to stressing the importance of literacy.

Teachers first asked their homeroom students to create a “dream” poster for a “Dreamworks” activity.

The poster consisted of a collage of photos and powerful words from newspapers and magazines that pertain to their aspirations and how they will reach them.

Next, the school conducted a theme competition.

Students created a short story with any theme of their choice (betrayal, love, be careful what you wish for, etc,).

Day three focused on role models. Teachers asked role models to come to the school and speak to the students about the importance of literacy.

At the end of the week, students were asked to dress as their favorite character from a book and see how many people could identify the character without any hints.
