Having an addictive personality all my life, I’ve always had to battle different habits. I had victory over some of the more serious ones, but my love for sweets is still a problem. Over the years, my craving was almost unbearable during the Easter season.
When my children were young, I would tell Jeanne what to buy for their baskets and it was always the Easter candy that I liked – (pecan eggs, Heavenly Hash, coconut cream eggs and Gold Brick eggs). If she bought them too early, I would eat most of them before Easter Sunday and then she would have to get more.
One year I told her not to buy any candy until the Saturday before Easter. The Wednesday before Easter she said, “All the candy you like will be gone if I don’t buy some now.” I agreed that she should buy them, but I wanted her to hide them from me.
The day I knew she bought the candy, I went to sleep about 9 o’clock that night. However, I blamed the devil for waking me up at 2 a.m. Knowing the candy was in the house, I searched every possible place for it. (Imagine a grown man going on an Easter egg hunt in his house in the wee hours of the morning!)
After a few minutes, unsuccessful in my search, I woke up Jeanne. “Where is the candy?” I whispered.
“I’m not going to tell you.”
“Look! I don’t want to argue with you at 2 o’clock in the morning! Tell me where the candy is!”
She gave in and my addiction was satisfied. That was 52 years ago.
Today, things have changed. We no longer have Easter egg hunts at 2 o’clock in the morning. Jeanne still buys my favorite Easter candy, but I’m thankful she doesn’t have to hide it.
