GRAMERCY — A Gonzales man was killed Wednesday morning during a single-vehicle wreck in St. James Parish.
Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash shortly after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday that occurred on Airline Highway, south of I-10 in St. James Parish.
The crash took the life of 53-year-old Bobby L. Garantine of Gonzales.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed the crash occurred as Garantine was driving a 1991 Pontiac Bonneville northbound on Airline Highway just south of the Blind River.
State Police said for unknown reasons Garantine’s Bonneville entered into the center median. He overcorrected, causing his vehicle to run off the roadway to the right.
“Upon doing so the Bonneville struck a tree on the driver’s side and became partially submerged in water,” Trooper Jared L. Sandifer said. “Garantine was unrestrained at the time of the crash.”
He was taken to St. James Hospital in Lutcher, where he succumbed to injuries received in the crash, authorities said.
“Impairment is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from Garantine and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis,” Sandifer said.
