I have a habit of keeping articles on issues that concern me. I have a Newsweek magazine dated April 13, 2009 that got my attention. In big bold red letters on a black background it read: THE DECLINE AND FALL OF CHRISTIAN AMERICA by Jon Meacham.

 

Keep in mind that the article is 12 years old. It stated that since 1990 the number of Americans who claimed no religious affiliation had nearly doubled, rising from 8 to 15 percent. The author stressed that the Christian God wasn’t dead, but that He is less of a force in American politics and its culture than at any time in his memory. During that period, the percentage of self-identified Christians had fallen 10 percentage points from 86 to 76.

The attack on Christianity is not new. In 1962, the Supreme Court’s decision to end mandatory school prayer and 11 years later, the Roe vs. Wade ruling legalizing abortion sent a message, loud and clear, that maybe America was not a Christian nation.

In that same article, conservative columnist Cal Thomas, who was an early figure in the Moral Majority that was responsible for Ronald Reagan being elected President, realized that the movement to make America a Christian nation was flawed in theological terms. He said, “No country can be truly ‘Christian’. Only people can. God is above all nations, and, in fact, Isaiah says that ‘All nations are to him a drop in the bucket and less than nothing’.”

The results of the last election proved that God has allowed His people to recognize the difference between the light and the darkness.

I’m concerned about the condition of our great country. Be assured it’s not the people who are elected that will turn it around. It will depend on the committed Christians.
