RESERVE — Rita Brignac Kaul has been a resident at Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home since late 2010, already serving the home as a Mardi Gras queen.
The Gramercy native, born in 1922, served in the Women’s Marine Corps from 1945 to 1946 and again from 1948 to 1949 following a break to care for her sick mother. She then joined the Navy Reserve on Jan. 11, 1950, serving until Jan. 10, 1954, at the New Orleans 8th Naval District, where she achieved the rank of corporal.
After her military career, she attended Soule College for clerical studies and Moler Beauty School.
She worked at the Celotex Plant in Marrero for many years before becoming a homemaker. She married Henry Kaul, a Navy veteran who worked as an aviation machinist.
He was also an instrumentation, watch and clock repairman.
They lived in Arabi until Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home in 2005. They then moved to Bush.
Rita Brignac Kaul’s parents were Hamilton Brignac and Sidone Hymel. She attended Lutcher High School, where she played the flute in the band.
The home is always looking for volunteers to help in various roles from activities, room visits and talent shows.
Those interested in helping can call Sonya Hebert, resident activity director, at 985- 479-4080, ext, 1028, or email sonya.hebert@vetaffairs.la.gov.
