RESERVE — With Riverside Academy trailing 14-7 and only 2:20 left on the clock during last Friday’s district showdown against West St. John, the Rams seemed poised to earn another year of bragging rights in the cross-river rivalry.

That was until Riverside’s Elijah Davis ran for a 23-yard touchdown run and took a risk on a two-point conversion in a show stopping performance that nudged the Rebels to a 15-14 victory. It was a battle of defense Friday night as the Rams and the Rebels held each other to very little scoring throughout the game.

This Friday night, Riverside Academy is slated to play a final district game on the road against Metairie Park Country Day. With the last few scheduled contests cancelled due to positive COVID-19 tests, the Country Day Cajuns have not played since their 34-6 win over St. Martin’s Episcopal on Oct. 23. The Cajuns are currently 2-2 for the season.

With an impressive 6-1 record, Riverside Academy is having its best season since head coach Kevin Dizer took the reins in 2018.

West St. John will take on St. Martin’s Episcopal in the final regular season game of the unusual 2020 season. The Rams started the season strong with a 44-0 win over Lusher Charter but soon lost their footing, suffering four consecutive losses and two weeks of cancelled games. Though last Friday’s game against Riverside Academy ended in a loss, the Rams put forth a solid performance and saw contributions from Kailep Edwards, Douglass Lawson, R’Khoby Robeson, Ferdinand Young and Jaydon Hamilton.

St. Martin’s Episcopal had its most recent game cancelled. The St. Martin’s Saints are 2-3 for the year, with early season wins against Fisher and Thomas Jefferson.

St. Charles Catholic traveled to Buras to face South Plaquemines in a district contest last Friday and came out with a 40-14 victory. Zach Vicknair rushed for 113 yards and had a hand in nearly every touchdown of the night.

 

 

The Comets’ final regular season game in the 2020 season will be against Cohen, a team with a 0-4 overall record. Meanwhile, the Comets have a solid 5-2 record, with the only losses for the season coming against De La Salle and an undefeated Isidore Newman.

The East St. John Wildcats were scheduled to face Terrebonne on Friday the 13^th, but the district contest was cancelled after East St. John High School reported one confirmed case and one suspected case of COVID-19 among students at the school.

If cleared for COVID-19 concerns this week, East St. John will travel to Thibodaux for the final district contest of the year. Thibodaux managed a close 36-35 win over H.L. Bourgeois on Nov. 13, increasing the Tigers’ overall season record to three wins and four losses.

East St. John is having a strong season under the leadership of third-year coach Brandon Brown. Thus far, the E has collected five wins and only one loss against Destrehan.
