THIBODAUX — East St. John put together a strong showing at its preseason scrimmage against Donaldsonville Thursday night, unofficially outscoring the Tigers 40-6 at E.D. White.
LSU commitment Xavier Lewis accounted for three touchdowns, two of them rushing scores, while Nigel Anderson and Ahmani Martin each scored two of their own for ESJ.
“We’re excited about what we saw tonight,” East St. John coach Phillip Banko said. “The good thing is we get out of there with nobody hurt, so that’s awesome for us. I thought we played well.”
Martin had two interceptions and scored twice on defense for the Wildcats. East St. John forced six turnovers overall.
“The defense was flying to the ball,” Banko said.
ESJ will enter the season with something to prove along the offensive line, as all five starters from a year ago are gone. Banko offered high praise for junior tackle Alton Webb’s play at the scrimmage, and said the line as a whole did a solid job.
“He dominated at left tackle,” Banko said of Webb. “I saw everything I expected to see.”
